Background
The Problem
In the early 2000s, a housing master plan proposed demolishing 80% of Crooswijk’s housing. Public protests forced the municipality to cancel parts of the proposal.
What happened during this planning process, and why residents' voices were only heard once the plans were already finalized?

A photo I took inside the municipality where plans were displayed on poster boards, discarded to the side. They are one-way, leaving no space for resident feedback.

Testing the Prototype
Research Question
Under what conditions do residents feel empowered to share profound, honest, and meaningful opinions on going plans related to their living situations?

Our Findings
Residents were excited by the possibility to shape plans that were in early development. They responded better to open ended prompts and reported that the presence of a municipal representative during the process helped encouraged their participation.
